The country’s recognized governing body for basketball is making a serious bid to host the FIBA-Asia qualifying tournament for the 2012 London Olympics.
The intention to stage the quadrennial meet in the country was relayed to top International Basketball Federation (FIBA) officials by BAP-SBP executives led by Noli Eala and Ricky Vargas in a special meeting held during the Beijing Olympics.
“We already told FIBA that the Philippines is more than willing to host the FIBA-Asia meet in 2011 which will serve as qualifier to the 2012 Olympics in London," said Vargas, the BAP-SBP vice chairman, during a break in the planning session of the Philippine Basketball Association board being held in Macau.
FIBA secretary-general Patrick Baumann acknowledged the goodwill of the Filipinos and has told them to make their request formal
